The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has raised a red flag over the decision of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to drop charges against key government officials implicated in the alleged diversion of iron sheets meant for vulnerable people in the Karamoja region.
On Friday, June 23rd, 2023, DPP Jane Francis Abodo announced that they had closed some 17 files involving senior officials, including Ministers, Speaker of Parliament Anita Anet, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and others, citing a lack of enough evidence to prosecute them.
While briefing a weekly press conference at the Party headquarters on Monday, June 23rd, 2023, the FDC Party President, Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, insists that existing evidence linking the officials is overwhelming.
“We express our deep concerns regarding the recent decision made by the DPP to discontinue the prosecution of Ministers and other high-ranking officials involved in the iron sheets saga,” said FDC Amuriat.
While we acknowledge the DPP’s authority to close any case, we firmly believe that this particular case is of the utmost public interest, and we are disheartened by the outcome, he said.
“This not only undermines the faith of the public but also puts whistleblowers at greater risk. We urge the DPP to reconsider this decision, revisit the evidence, and hold these officials accountable for their actions,” he said.
This comes after the office of the DPP announced its decision to drop investigations into 17 high-profile government officials accused of diverting iron sheets.
