The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has condemned the recent police brutality against their supporters, including journalists, during the ongoing Kawempe North by-election campaigns.
While addressing the press at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi on March 3, 2025, the spokesperson, John Kikonyogo, said many of their supporters were arrested and detained without justification on nomination day.
“Several of our leaders, including Councilors Ngobi Edris, Kiirya Ngobi, Kavuma Moses, Nvanungi Richard, and Kintu John, were arrested and detained at Kawempe Police Station, where they slept a night without justification,” Kikonyogo said.
Kikonyoga appealed to the police leadership to investigate personnel behind the recent brutality.
Last week on Wednesday, February 24th, 2025, after the nomination of Kawempe North aspirants, Sadat Mukiibi (FDC) and Nalukoola Erias (NUP), police arrested several opposition supporters.
A local journalist at Top TV, Ibrahim Miracle, was severely injured in the eye after being brutalized by JAAT operatives.
The Kawempe North seat fell vacant in January 2025 after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya.
The Kawempe North by-election is scheduled to take place on March 13, 2025.
