The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party based in Najjanankumbi has warned the Kampala Capital City authorities on the possible outbreak of cholera disease due to the careless disposal of garbage in different parts of Kampala city.

According to John Kikonyogo, the FDC party spokesperson, many urban dwellers have started dropping garbage at anyplace because the government has restricted the trucks from accessing Kiteezi landfill, adding that there has been negligence by those responsible over the city, including the city councilors, KCCA, and the Ministry of Health, among others.

“This is an issue that should have been a matter of national concern, but the way the country has handled it is deplorable, and this means that Ugandans are not caring about their country as they should,” Kikonyogo said.

Kikonyogo made the remarks while addressing the press at FDC party headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Monday, September 23, 2024.

“After Kiteezi was closed, the people who take garbage have no where to take it. Whoever has garbage is dumping it on the roadside. So the garbage is back in the city, and the result will be cholera,” he added.

However, Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), said that there are efforts to identify a new dumping site of at least 100 acres to replace Kiteezi.

“The new site will be over 100 acres, not located along main roads, and at least 30 kilometers away from Kampala,” she said.

Responding to the lack of a dumping site as alleged by FDC’s Kikonyogo, Kisaka said KCCA is dumping garbage in Katikolo in Mukono DistrictMukono District and is yet to find an alternative dumping site for city garbage that will permanently replace the Kiteezi site, whose usage was suspended after it collapsed last month.
