The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has condemned the recently revised electoral roadmap announced by the Electoral Commission, alleging that the changes unfairly benefit the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Mulindwa Walid Lubega, FDC’s deputy secretary for publicity, on Monday argued that the updated schedule disrupts internal party arrangements that were based on the original Electoral Commission timeline.
“This adjusted roadmap is here to favor NRM. We think the Electoral Commission makes changes and decisions following what NRM wants and does not consider other political parties,” Mulindwa said.
He further criticized the commission for failing to engage key stakeholders during the revision process, arguing the changes undermine the fairness of the electoral process.
“The party is further concerned with lack of stakeholder participation while the electoral body reviews its roadmap, especially us political parties. The time left for electoral activities is too short to ensure a fair process,” Mulindwa added.
Mulindwa called on the Electoral Commission to adopt a standardized election calendar with fixed dates, similar to systems in countries like the United States where election dates are constitutionally entrenched.
This, he said, would allow for better planning and organization across the entire five-year electoral cycle.
The revised electoral calendar, announced last Thursday by Electoral Commission Chairman Simon Byabakama, moves the nomination dates for parliamentary candidates to October 15 and 16, 2025, instead of the originally scheduled September 16 and 17.
The Electoral Commission is yet to comment on these statements.
