The Independent Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, has rallied politicians to address voter bribery, corruption, and vote rigging, saying it often impedes free and fair electoral processes.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, while interacting with civil society representatives, including local leaders from the Lango sub-region, on strengthening citizens’ engagement in elections held at the Margarita Hotel in Lira City.
Justice Byabakama said free and fair electoral processes require the contributions of all stakeholders, including voters.
Julius Mucunguzi, the EC Spokesperson, said the engagement aims at exploring ways to boost citizens’ involvement in the electoral process. He added that the regional engagement is to escalate the total participation of all stakeholders to dialogue about the roadmap for the 2026 general elections.
David Kennedy Odongo, the LCV chairperson of Alebtong district and the chair of all the district LCV chairpersons in the Lango Sub region, called on security agencies to collaborate with the Electoral Commission to mitigate conflicts that arise during the election period.
He also thanked the EC for holding two peaceful elections in Oyam North and Dokolo district, respectively.
The gathering was organized by civil society in partnership with the Independent Electoral Commission.
