The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced revised dates for the nomination of presidential candidates in Uganda’s upcoming 2025/2026 general elections.

The nomination exercise, which was initially scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd, 2025, will now take place earlier on September 23rd and 24th, 2025.

The announcement was made by EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, during a press briefing held at the Commission’s headquarters in Kampala on July 18, 2025.

Byabakama reiterated the EC’s commitment to delivering a smooth, inclusive, and transparent electoral process.

“The Electoral Commission has adjusted the dates for the nomination of candidates for Presidential Elections 2025/2026, which was earlier scheduled to be conducted on 2nd and 3rd October 2025. The nominations will now take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025,” Justice Byabakama said.

The revised timeline gives political parties and aspirants less time to complete their nomination requirements and finalize campaign strategies. This has led to a surge in activity within political circles, with parties and candidates accelerating preparations to meet the new deadlines.

Some opposition figures have expressed concern over the timing of the announcement, calling on the EC to ensure adequate communication and support mechanisms to help candidates adjust accordingly.

In response, the EC has appealed to all stakeholders including political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to help disseminate the updated information and ensure widespread awareness of the new nomination dates.

Justice Byabakama reiterated the Commission’s readiness to facilitate all qualified candidates and pledged continued engagement with the public as the country moves closer to a critical electoral milestone.
