EC Kicks Off Nomination of Candidates for Oyam North By-Elections

The Electoral Commission has kicked off the nomination of candidates to contest in the Oyam North County parliamentary by-election today, Monday, June 19, 2023.

Paul Bukenya, the EC Spokesperson, said so far, a total of six aspirants have confirmed their participation and booked a date and time for nomination during the two-day exercise.

“This exercise will be conducted at Oyam District Council Hall in Oyam Town Council, starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. So far, we have received six aspirants who have booked a date and time for nomination as candidates,” said Bukenya.

According to Bukenya, those who are due to be nominated are Queen Dorothy Amolo (independent), Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko (UPC), Samuel Engola Okello (NRM), Daniel Okello (NUP), Fred Newton Okello (FDC), and Willy Omodo (independent).

The Oyam County North constituency by-election will be conducted on July 6, 2023, across the 167 polling stations in Oyam district.

On Saturday, June 17th, 2023, the NRM party secretariat conducted a primary election in which the son of the fallen Minister Engola was elected by the supporters as the flag bearer.

The by-election follows the death of Rtd. Col. Charles Okello Engola, who was shot by his bodyguard at his home in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.
