Dr. Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima has been appointed as the new Executive Director (ED) of Mulago National Referral Hospital, replacing Dr. Byarugaba Baterana, who had been recently reinstated as of June 30, 2023.

In a phone interview with Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Ministry of Health Spokesperson, on April 20, 2024, he said that Dr. Byanyima was appointed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Ainebyoona said that the substantive appointment of Byanyima as ED will enable better monitoring and ensure services are provided to patients.

When asked about why Dr.Byarugaba had been replaced, Ainebyoona said that he had reached his retirement age.

Dr. Byanyima has been Mulago Hospital’s substantive deputy executive director since May 10, 2020.

Dr. Byanyima, a consultant radiologist, has been working in the medical field for 29 years, with 27 of those years spent at Mulago Hospital.

She has a bachelor’s degree in medicine from Makerere University, a master’s degree in radiology, and an executive master’s degree in business administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) in Arusha, Tanzania.

Byanyima served as the Mulago Hospital clinical head of diagnostics from 2009 to 2018 and was the head of the radiology department from 2008 to 2009.

According to Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Health, Byanyima, has been involved in clinical work at the hospital, ensuring theaters are functioning, drugs are available, and patients are receiving the care they need.

Additionally, Byanyima has been responsible for heading all senior consultants at Mulago and executing the duties of the executive director.

She has been credited with leading a great team at Mulago that was at the forefront of fighting against coronavirus.
