DPP Drops Terrorism Charges Against King of Rwenzururu, 217 Others

The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP has dropped terrorism charges against Omusinga Wa Rwenzururu, Charles Wesley Mumbere, and 217 others and subsequently asked court to discontinue their trial.

This was after DPP said the accused had applied for amnesty, which has been granted.

King Mumbere of Rwenzururu Kingdom, along with his royal guards and others, has been battling charges involving murder, treason, and aggravated robbery, and his movements have been restricted to Kampala and Wakiso.

However, with the charges dropped, the Omusinga can now go back to his kingdom after seven years.

According to Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, the charges withdrawn include murder, terrorism, treason, malicious damage to property, attempted murder, and aggravated robbery, among others.

They are said to have committed the offenses between the months of July and November 2016 at Bukara Village, Kabonero sub-county, and Nyabutsi village, Karangura sub-county, in Kabalore district.
