Tensions between the Uganda Young democrats (UYD) youth wing and the Electoral CommissionUYD President Emeritus Ismail Kiirya continue to escalate as the frustrated party youth vow to take their grievances to the EC headquarters in large numbers.

Speaking at a press briefing held at Tavern Woods in Kabuusu on Friday, September 12, 2025, UYD President Emeritus Ismail Kiirya accused the Commission of ignoring their repeated appeals. He explained that they had petitioned the EC not to gazette the leaders elected during the controversial DP delegates’ conference in Mbarara, but the Commission failed to respond.

“The court in Mbarara ruled that the Commission has a statutory duty to supervise political parties and ensure they comply with the provisions of the law. They cannot hide in legal gymnastics anymore,” Kiirya said.

He stressed that internal conflict resolution mechanisms within the Democratic Party are dysfunctional, making it impossible to address disputes through the Secretary General, who is often the subject of the complaints.

“As DP, we don’t have genuine internal mechanisms. The Secretary General is both the referee and the accused,” Kiirya argued.

UYD Head of Communications, Dumba Julius, revealed that they had written to the EC again on September 10 and are awaiting a response.

“If the Electoral Commission does not reply within seven days, we shall march to their offices. On Friday, September 17, we call upon all DP members to join us as we demand answers and justice,” he declared.

Mpunge Michael, who contested in the disputed delegates’ conference, warned that unresolved internal wrangles are crippling the party.

“DP is bleeding because of these issues. Nominations have ended, and many members failed to be nominated since DP leaders have not been gazetted by the EC. This makes it impossible for them to second candidates,” Mpunge explained.

The warnings were echoed by Wadimba Anthony, the DP chairman in Kayunga District, who said the planned march would surpass previous protests. He also cautioned the EC against releasing Shs7 billion in party funds to the disputed leadership.

“If the EC releases the money, all officers involved will be sued individually. This time we are coming in bigger numbers, and we shall carry special gifts for Justice Byabakama to show our displeasure,” Wadimba said.

The UYD insists that the EC must act decisively following the disputed 12th National Delegates’ Conference held between May 30 and June 2, 2025, in Mbarara. Several DP members claim the elections that produced the current party leaders were fraudulent, sparking court battles and deepening internal divisions.

With the deadline for EC’s response fast approaching, the stage is set for a potential confrontation that could not only intensify DP’s internal crisis but also test the Commission’s credibility in managing political party affairs.
