The Democratic Party (DP) has urged school operators to be lenient on parents and guardians who have failed to pay full amounts of school fees and other scholastic materials.

Ismail Kiirya, the acting spokesperson of the DP and the President of Uganda Young Democrats, said this while addressing the press at City House on February 6, 2024.

“As the Democratic Party, we want to request that all schools be lenient to parents because of the economy. If the parents pay part of the fees and the school requirements, kindly allow their children to be in school because no parent would prefer to give half pay when he or she can afford full pay immediately,” Kiirya said.

He urged the government to come up with a policy to regulate school fees because parents are suffering.

“Let’s have a maximum and a minimum charge in schools; otherwise, you are deliberately favoring some category of power to exorbitantly charge fees the way they want,” Kiirya added.

On the commemoration of the 43rd Tarehe Sita celebration, held in Bugwere District and presided over by President Yoweri Museveni, Kiirya said that there is no need to celebrate and remember this day because many people lost their lives in the Luweero triangle and the NRM government hasn’t done anything worth commemorating.

Kiirya said that Ugandans have not in any way benefited from wars caused by the NRA rebels, questioning the relevancy of these historical celebrations to development.

The DP also cautioned Ugandans and the general public to desist from rebelling against their country and rather use the available democratic processes to oust the sitting government.
