The Democratic Party Secretary General, Gerald Siranda, has called for unity among the party members as the party embarks on the membership registration exercise.

While speaking to the press on May 30, 2024, at City House in Kampala, Siranda, who is also a member of the East African legislative assembly, said that it was resolved at the party National Executive Committee (NEC) on April 19, 2024, in Mbale that the party finds a solution to the internal conflict so that they can create harmony within the party.

“While in Mbale, NEC also resolved that they would continue with conflict resolution and reach out to all the members with the view of reuniting them and bringing them back into the party,” Siranda said.

On disagreements within the party, Siranda said that there have been disagreements even before the current leadership, and this is not just for the DP as a party.

“DP disagreements have not started today; we have had them between Ssemwogerere, during the Ssebana Kizito era, and even now during President Mao’s time, but we are requesting that no matter what it is, come back home and re-register as party members so that you can be part of the party leadership structures, and we don’t want to leave anyone behind because we want to rebuild our party,” Siranda added.

He emphasized that if anyone claims that they are party members without being in the party registers, they will not be allowed to participate in any party voting activities.

Siranda said that membership is renewed every year, and for members to register, they now have to part with only Ugx 2000 to buy a membership card as registration goes on till the end of May 2024.

The Democratic Party has joined the rest of the political parties that have embarked on a process of engaging their party members in grass-roots registration and mobilization after the NRM, ANT, and NUP launched their election road maps recently.
