The Democratic Party (DP) has sworn in the interim leadership of the party from the five divisions of Kampala, including Rubaga, Kawempe, Nakawa, Makindye, and Kampala central.

According to Gerald Siranda, the Secretary General of the DP, the prime role of the new leaders is spearheading the membership registration process, which is aimed at streamlining the leadership structures of the party at all levels.

“We applaud you for accepting the leadership responsibility at a time when the party is faced with many trials. This process is aimed at separating supporters and members from the well-wishers of the party. We know very well that those who have been enemies of the party went away. We therefore ask you to guard the party from such enemies,” Siranda said.

Siranda made the remarks during the launch of the membership registration process on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the party headquarters in Nakulabye.

“I will also give you the new stamps because you are responsible for managing party affairs in the area of your jurisdiction. I will also file a copy of the list of your names with the Electoral Commission to inform it that you are the new leaders of the party in the five divisions of Kampala,” Siranda said.

Ismail Kirya, the acting DP Spokesperson, appealed to all party members at all levels to register, stating that it’s the most important step any party member can take.

“This activity is set to confirm the membership of any person. Whoever will miss the registration will not be allowed to be elected or vote leaders into party positions,” Kirya said.

According to Siranda, those who exited the party are free to come back and reconcile with the party leadership and re-register for scrutiny before they become leaders.
