The Democratic Party (DP) has today, February 18, 2025 picked its flag bearer for the Kawempe North by election

Henry Kasakya, will be the front runner representing the DP fraternity in the race to replace the late Ssegirinya Muhammad who died on January 9, 2025.

DP party president Norbert Mao made the announcement during a media and party members briefing at the party headquarters on Balintuma road in Rubaga in Kampala.

He expressed optimism said in the capability and definite choice the Democratic Party had taken pride in securing the position during the election.

“As DP President, I am happy to announce that our candidate can debate with the best of the best. If you want comedy you can elect a comedian, but we already have a lot of comedy in parliament,” Mao said.

Mao stated the party’s readiness for stiff competition and support to their candidate to win Kawempe North by election.

“Our campaign will be a strong and we will win, and Henry is one who will take on the people we will meet in the field,” Mao added.

While giving his acceptance speech after being forwarded as the party flag bearer, Kasakya said that his first priority for the Kawempe people will be the issue of bodaboda riders being arrested and being charged money for breakdown.

“We have many boda riders in Kawempe and my first engagement as a member of parliament is to fight for boda boda riders who on most cases are arrested and forced to pay a hefty amount of money for their bodas to be put on breakdown when all this should be the cost of government,” Kasakya said.

Once as a DP member of parliament, Kasakya promised that he will also help in resolving internal party conflicts so that the party can go back to being a strong party as it used to be.

“The internal conflicts are undermining the progress of DP and it won’t be the best party of we keep with these internal conflicts and my entry into politics is to also re organize the DP,” Kasakya noted.

Kasakya who is a member of the Buganda Lukiiko and former member of Uganda Young Democrats has worked in the civil society as a consultant and has trained many leaders from different political parties under the umbrella of IPOD.

Kasakya becomes the fifth candidate to openly declare intentions for Kawempe North by election, after NRM’s Nambi Farida, FDC, Mukiibi sadat, NUP’s Nalukoola Erias, independent Mohammed Lusswa Luwemba.

The Kawempe North by election is slated to take place on March, 13, 2025.
