DP Calls for Restoration of Presidential Term Limits

Mwesigwa explained that a peaceful transfer of power is the one that will facilitate the restoration of the presidential term limits, asking President Museveni to lead this by example. He added that if someone else takes power from him forcefully, as he did in 1986, his gospel will have no impact.

The Democratic Party (DP) has called for a peaceful transfer of power, which will in turn facilitate the restoration of term limits.

This was said by the DP President press secretary, Fred Mwesigwa, while addressing the media on November 19, 2024, at the party headquarters on Balintuma Road in Kampala.

He said that on November 15, 2024, the Deputy Speaker was hosted at the constitutional conference, from where he expressed his support to restore the presidential term limits.

“Although his support of presidential term limits is only after President Museveni, as the Democratic Party, we want to thank him for those brave remarks; recently, we were only hearing such remarks from the DP’s President General, Hon. Norbert Mao,” he said.

According to a statement on the Parliament website, while presiding over the commissioning of the virtual museum of constitutionalism at a constitutional symposium held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa is quoted to have re-echoed the call for reinstatement of presidential term limits, saying that they are the strongest benchmark of democracy.

“My prayer is that after President Yoweri Museveni, we should never have any leader who leads beyond two terms. We should work hard to return term limits,” Tayebwa said.

“On that note, therefore, we want to remind the Deputy Speaker that despite the presidential term limits, the country is also waiting for a peaceful transfer of power from President Museveni to another person,” Mwesigwa said.

Mwesigwa explained that a peaceful transfer of power is the one that will facilitate the restoration of the presidential term limits, asking President Museveni to lead this by example. He added that if someone else takes power from him forcefully, as he did in 1986, his gospel will have no impact.

“We want to therefore request you, the Deputy Speaker, to also talk to President Museven to allow a peaceful transfer of power in order to facilitate your call of the presidential term limits,” he noted.
