The Democratic Party Women’s League Chairperson, Aisha Waliggo who also doubles as the Chairperson of the Inter-party Women’s Platform has called upon the Parliament of Uganda to table a bill that will see women being paid for domestic work.

While addressing members of the press at City House in Kampala on March 12, 2024, Waliggo said that as the DP women’s league, they are going to do whatever is necessary to petition parliament to table a bill that will seek to have all women being paid for the domestic work they do in their homes.

“Women spend most of their time on unpaid work, as DP women’s wing we are calling upon parliament to ensure that women’s domestic work is paid for if they are to compete with male counterparts.

We call upon civil society, parliament, and other parties to call for a bill to support paid domestic work,” Waliggo said.

Waliggo’s remarks come as the country and world at large celebrate women’s Day which she says women are still marginalized and many reasons make them vulnerable and can’t compete with their male counterparts.

“We still have limited access to credit because only 16 % id women own property in their names according to World Bank and only 11% own houses in their names.

Access to credit is limited due to a lack of collateral security,” and there is no way we can keep celebrating women’s day when these challenges are still at hand,” Waliggo added.

Waliggo further criticized the government for caring less about women’s health as the government can only empower a healthy women population.

The international Women’s Day is celebrated every 8 March worldwide and is meant to recognize the contribution of women to society and highlight challenges faced by women in communities to forge visible solutions.

In Uganda, this year’s Women’s Day celebrations were held in Katakwi district under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
