DP Asks MPs to Abandon Move to Knife Commissioners

“The same Members of Parliament censured Minister Namuganza, and up to now she is still a minister. Have they (MPs) asked themselves why?” Kirya argued.

The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has asked a section of legislators pushing to remove four Parliamentary Commissioners to abandon the move, describing it as petty.

Ismael Kirya, the President of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) and also the acting party spokesperson, while addressing the weekly press briefing on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the City House in Kampala, said that whereas they do not support corruption, there are more important issues that affect Ugandans that the MPs should focus on.

Kirya said the legislators should consider focusing on more significant issues than the censorship of commissioners accused of rewarding themselves with Shs1.7 billion while in office.

“Parliament recently approved billions of shillings for the Lubowa Specialized Hospital. How far have they gone with the investigations concerning Lubowa? Because Shs359 billion is a lot of money that should be investigated thoroughly,” said Kirya.

Kirya claimed the censure motion is bound to fail because it engulfs the already-speaker Anita Annet Among.

“The same Members of Parliament censured Minister Namuganza, and up to now she is still a minister. Have they (MPs) asked themselves why?” Kirya argued.

The motion being mooted by MP Theodore Ssekikubo has so far recorded some 123 out of the needed 177 signatures.

The commissioners in question are Esther Afoyochan, the Zombo District Woman Representative; Prossy Akampurira, her Rubanda Counterpart; Solomon Silwany for Bukooli Central; and Mathias Mpuuga of Nyendo Mukungwe County.
