Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja has cleared the air that the new road network in Masaka City was solely constructed by the central government under the USMID Project, unlike speculations sponsored by city mayor Florence Namayanja for political capital, as the 2026 general election nears.
On 08 July 2025, Namayanja while delivering the 2025 State of Masaka City Address at mayor’s gardens, said her leadership constructed infrastructures in the city including Masaka Recreation Stadium, new roads and installed street lights.
However, Rt Hon Nabbanja clarified that government fully funded the new roads with street lights under the USMID project, as well as ongoing construction of the stadium. She wondered where Masaka City could get such financial capacity to construct the expensive modern infrastructure.
She was speaking as a Chief Guest at fundraising Ceremony to construct St Joseph Nyendo Catholic Church on invitation of Rt Rev. Serverus Jumba, the Bishop of Masaka Diocese on 07 September 2025 in Nyendo Town, Masaka City.
“Mayor Namayanja and her council never constructed any road, neither maintaining them except the NRM government”, Nabbanja emphasized.
The Prime Minister noted that Masaka City has the best road network among the new cities and directed the mayor to keep them clean. She thus rallied voters in Greater Masaka Sub Region to support President Yoweri Museveni in 2026 general elections as appreciation for gifting them with a city. Nabbanja while smiling added, “Whenever you move on good tarmac roads in this City appreciate President Museveni.”
This prompted the congregation to cheer her, while chanting the president’s name for the excellent performance. Opposition figures such as Hon Mathias Mpuuga, the Democratic Front President and area member of parliament (MP), Samuel Muyizzi, a NUP MP aspirant among others, were surprised about the enormous support of President Museveni in Masaka.
In unusual circumstances Mayor Namayanja a close friend to bishop Jumba, was conspicuously absent at a ceremony presided over by the bishop himself.
The Prime Minister delivered UGX20 million donated by President Museveni, a personal contribution of UGX10 million, and 300 pieces of iron sheets from her office towards the completion of St. Joseph Nyendo sub parish church.
