Districts in the Lango sub-region have conducted a joint council meeting to honour the former Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament, Cecilia Atim Ogwal.

In the special sitting held at Dokolo Technical Institute open ground on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the local leaders resolved to name a road in Dokolo after the deceased to honour her contributions to Uganda.

The joint meeting drew Councillors, LCV chairpersons, and mayors from all the districts in the Lango sub-region, including Dokolo, Otuke, Oyam, Alebtong, Kwania, Apac, Lira, Amolatar, Kole, Lira City, and Apac Municipality.

James Otto Apili, the Dokolo District LCV chairperson, urged the government to ensure that initiatives that were being undertaken by the late MP Cecilia Atim Ogwal are successfully implemented.

Otto said that before her death, MP Ogwal had been supporting many children from needy families under her Education Trust Fund, pushing for the completion of the construction of the Amodo Bridge that connects Okwongodul Sub County with Dokolo South via the Adwoki trading centre. He said the construction of this particular bridge had stalled several years ago.

He listed some of the projects that the late MP Ogwal was lobbying for from the government, including the elevation of Dokolo Health Centre IV to a district hospital, the creation of Dokolo Municipality, and the escalation of rural electrification in major areas within the district.

Otto said the deceased had consistently been involved in all the developmental activities in the area.

James Omara Elem, the secretary for administration in Lira City, suggested that each year, every district local government in Lango should contribute a specific amount of money to support the education trust fund.

Omara urged the government to speed up the process to ensure that the Akii-Bua memorial stadium is built since it was one of the key issues raised by the deceased in Parliament.

Alex Opala, a local councilor from Kwania district, urged other leaders to emulate the political maturity and tolerance exhibited by the fallen leader throughout her service.

MP Cecilia Ogwal passed away in a hospital in India on January 18, 2024, after succumbing to a cancer illness.

The body of MP Ogwal is expected to spend a night at her residence in Lira City, and she will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Dog-gudu village, Alito Sub County, Kole district.
