A peaceful election in Rukungiri Municipality turned violent as supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Western Division staged a protest at the party’s district offices, demanding clarity and justice over a disputed local election.
The demonstration came after Precious Mwesigwa claims she was duly elected to the post, but her leadership was being challenged by Michael Byarugaba, the District Councilor representing the same area.
Protesters, including voters Enock Kakuru, Daphine Byamuhaki, and Stellar Musinguzi, voiced frustration over the dispute, calling on party leaders to uphold transparency and fairness in resolving the matter.
“We want our voices to be respected. The election should reflect the will of the people,” one supporter stated during the demonstration.
Voters including Enock Kakuru, Daphine Byamuhaki, and Stellar Musinguzi expressed their dissatisfaction with the ongoing dispute and called for transparency and fairness in the party’s leadership processes.
Precious Mwesigwa stated that during the election, she secured 63 votes against Michael Byarugaba’s 60.
However, she accused the NRM registrar for Western Division Aban Muhumuza, of altering the results in favor of her rival.
Voters reiterated their concerns and insisted that the rightful winner be declared to avoid division in the party.
The District Councilor for Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality Michael Byarugaba, told our news reporter that Aban Muhumuza declared him the winner publicly. He urged party members to respect the election outcome once the results are announced.
