The Uganda Judiciary hosted the Bushenyi High Court Open Day in the South Western region today, 11th November 2025, putting focus on the crucial role of rehabilitation in the justice system.

The open day served as a platform to strengthen judicial accountability, promote transparency, and foster closer collaboration between the Judiciary, UPS, and the community.

Held under the theme “Enhancing Judicial Accountability and Access to Justice,” the event saw the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) showcase its transformative programs designed to turn inmates into law-abiding, responsible, and economically productive citizens.

Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Dr. Flavian Zeija was the notable visitor who toured the UPS exhibition stall, where he praised the exceptional craftsmanship displayed in the products made by inmates from the Bushenyi Main and Women Prisons workshops.

The impressive exhibit included a wide array of high-quality items such as furniture, crafts, shoes, fabrics, baskets, and leather footwear, demonstrating the inmates’ high skill levels and creativity.

During his tour, Dr. Zeija praised the UPS for its effective programs that successfully blend production, reformation, and access to justice.

He noted that such initiatives powerfully demonstrate the potential of rehabilitation in transforming lives.

The Assistant Superintendent of Prisons and acting Officer-in-Charge of Bushenyi Main Prison, Polly Dorcus Abalo welcomed the DCJ and highlighted the ongoing efforts, including vocational training and improved inmate welfare.

“The work being done here goes beyond punishment. We are equipping our inmates with skills that enable them to contribute meaningfully to society once released,” Abalo noted.

The Bushenyi High Court Open Day clearly demonstrated Uganda’s dedication to building a justice system that balances accountability with compassion, emphasizing rehabilitation as a key pillar.

By equipping inmates with practical skills and fostering collaboration between judicial institutions and the community, these efforts are paving the way for lasting social transformation.

This commitment not only promotes safer communities but also uplifts individuals by offering them a genuine chance to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.
