The quick and courageous actions of Kitintale residents helped stop an armed robbery on the morning of July 10, 2025. Working together with the police, they chased down two suspects, leading to the arrest of one and the death of the other during a dramatic pursuit from Kitintale to Bugolobi.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the robbers targeted a mobile money shop near the Access Building operated by agents Ibrahim Ssebanenya and Rashid Kyeyune. The two-armed men entered the shop, threatened the attendants, and started putting money into bags.
Luckily, the agents managed to escape and raise the alarm. Nearby residents heard the call for help and immediately responded.
“Residents quickly alerted Kitintale Police, who joined the chase as the suspects fled on a motorcycle,” SSP Onyango said.
Boda boda riders and other locals joined in, bravely following the suspects through the streets and one suspect, Farouk Matovu, was caught with the help of the crowd. He is now being held at Jinja Road Police Station.
The second suspect tried to scare the people by firing shots into the air as he escaped toward Bugolobi. But residents did not back down. He was eventually surrounded near a home where a UPDF soldier was on duty.
The soldier confronted the armed suspect and shot him dead during the standoff. A gun and two short magazines were recovered from the scene.
Police praised the community for their bravery and teamwork.
“The community’s fast response played a big role in stopping the robbery and helping our officers,” SSP Onyango revealed.
Police are still investigating to find out how much money was taken and if other people were involved in the crime.
