Court Martial Sentences UPDF Officer to Life Imprisonment over Murder

The 5th Division Court Martial in Agago district has sentenced a UPDF officer to life imprisonment over murder and the other to 30 years imprisonment for attempted murder.

Private Micheal Mukanja attached to the 79th Battalion killed Justine Omol after they had a disagreement over a football match on May 31, 2023.

According to Colonel Ismail Ssendagire who presided over the court session, the incident took place at around 5pm in Kokil trading Centre, when Mukanja shot dead Omol.

On the other hand, Private George Okello of the 81st Battalion was sentenced to 30 years for attempted murder.

According to Major Flavia Terimulungi, the 5th Division Spokesperson, on August 27, 2023, in Agago district, Okello shot and injured John Odwel after developing a disagreement.

“Odwel sustained injuries and is still undergoing treatment at Lacor Hospital,” Terimulungi said.

Colonel Ssendagire condemned the actions of the UPDF officers and reaffirmed that the force will continue to adhere to its beliefs of utmost discipline, noting that firearms are to protect civilians and not personal use.
