The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (COU), has called on the church’s leaders to focus on revitalization and leadership transition.
Archbishop Kazimba was officially closing the 27th Provincial Assembly of the Church of Uganda on August 23, 2024, at Uganda Christian University in Mukono. The assembly served as a platform to discuss critical issues facing the church and its educational institutions.
During the assembly, Archbishop Kazimba put strong emphasis on the revitalization of the Church of Uganda-founded schools and addressed concerns of neglect and mismanagement that have hindered their effectiveness.
“Quality Education Initiatives should be established by each church and a model school aimed at enhancing the quality of education provided within the community,” Archbishop Kazimba said.
The same assembly addressed issues regarding management and accountability surrounding the management of church assets, where suggestions were made to improve oversight and accountability to ensure proper stewardship of resources.
Additionally, a call for greater accountability in the use of tax revenues was also made, addressing prevalent issues of corruption and misappropriation of government funds.
One other key issue on the list of the discussions was the leadership transition, with the Rt. Rev. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa set to take over as the new Bishop of Ankole Diocese and succeeding the retiring Rt. Rev. Joseph Abura on August 25, 2024.
Rev. Canon Jackson Fredrick Baluku, who led the commencement of the assembly with the Holy Communion service, highlighted the importance of embodying goodness in all actions.
“I encourage you all to actively contribute to the assembly’s theme for the upcoming year,” Canon Baluku said.
The Provincial Assembly acts as the supreme governing body of the Church of Uganda, convening every two years to discuss critical matters and provide strategic direction for the development and self-sustainability of the COU.
Regular meetings of the Provincial Assembly Standing Committee (PASC) ensure ongoing governance and oversight.
This Provincial Assembly marks a pivotal moment for the Church of Uganda as it seeks to enhance its educational impact and ensure ethical governance moving forward.
