African leaders have underscored the continued need for increased unity and support in fostering better collaboration and strengthening regional ties around the continent.
This was after Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf was elected as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa.
In his victory speech, Youssouf expressed gratitude to his fellow candidates, Raila Odinga and Richard Randriamandrato, stating, “I am deeply honored to be elected to lead the African Union Commission… Together, we will work towards a united and prosperous Africa. I pledge to serve with integrity and commitment for the betterment of our continent.”
Uganda’s Ambassador to the UN, Adonia Ayebare, congratulated Youssouf, saying, “Congratulations, my Friend and Brother. You’re right; we need to unite the continent and face contemporary challenges.”
Kenyan President William Ruto acknowledged the outcome, expressing appreciation for the support given to Raila Odinga.
“While the outcome did not favour Kenya’s candidate, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude. This election was not about individuals or nations; it was about Africa’s future together, we will continue working for a united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage,” Ruto stated.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also extended his congratulations, saying, “Congratulations to H.E. @ymahmoudali on his election as Chairperson of the AU Commission… Somalia stands with the AU for a united & prosperous Africa.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia extends its warmest congratulations on the election of Mahamoud Ali Youssouf as the new Chairperson and Selma Malika Haddadi as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.
H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf’s election is a resounding affirmation of the trust and confidence placed in him by African Heads of State and Government. His leadership comes at a crucial time for our continent, as we work together to advance ‘The Africa We Want.’ I look forward to collaborating closely with H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf to strengthen regional stability and accelerate Africa’s integration agenda,” -H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu , IGAD Executive secretary.
Kenya’s Raila Odinga conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent for securing the position; wishing him well during his tenure.
“We say that we must strengthen democracy in the African continent and I’m therefore conceding defeat, and I want us to use this as an example of strengthening democracy in our continent,” Raila said.
“I want to wish my competitor Ali Youssouf all the best and success in his undertaking and also want to thank all those who voted for me and those who didn’t because of exercising their democracy,” he added.
Youssouf’s election underscores the increasing influence of smaller nations within the African Union, traditionally dominated by larger countries.
As Foreign Minister, Youssouf has been pivotal in strengthening Djibouti’s diplomatic ties, mediating regional disputes, and pushing for economic integration across Africa.
His leadership at the AU Commission is expected to focus on regional security, economic development, and institutional reforms.
The race for the AUC Chairpersonship was one of the most competitive in recent history, with candidates from Eastern Africa, the region designated for the position this term, presenting their cases.
The election process involved multiple rounds, highlighting the diverse interests and alliances within the AU’s 55 member nations.
