City lawyer, Eron Kiiza Granted Bail

The court’s decision came after Kiiza’s legal team successfully presented an application for bail, which was granted by Justice Michael Elubu. The bail was set at a cash bond of  20 million, in addition to further conditions.

Prominent human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza has been granted bail by the High Court’s Criminal Division today, April 4, 2025, after spending three months in prison.

Kiiza, who was sentenced to nine months for contempt of court by the General Court Martial, has been imprisoned since January 7, 2025.

The court’s decision came after Kiiza’s legal team successfully presented an application for bail, which was granted by Justice Michael Elubu. The bail was set at a cash bond of  ug shs20 million, in addition to further conditions.

According to Justice Michael Elubu, as part of the release terms, Kiiza must adhere to additional non-cash bonds totaling UGX 50 million through sureties.

“Kiiza is required to report to the Registrar every first Monday of the month, deposit his passport with the court, and refrain from leaving the country,” Justice Elubu added.

Justice Elubu adjourned the matter, highlighting the importance of ensuring that Kiiza fulfills the bail conditions while awaiting further proceedings in his ongoing legal battle.

While waiting for the next steps in the legal process, the ruling is considered a significant moment in the case, as Kiiza looks to challenge his conviction and sentence.
