CAF Appoints Former Cranes Midfielder, Hassan Wasswa as CHAN 2025 Draw Assistant

The legendary defender, alongside Mrisho Ngasa of Tanzania and Kenya’s McDonald Mariga, will grace the draw function at Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Former Cranes midfielder Hassan Wasswa has been selected to assist in conducting the draw of the 8th edition of the Total Energies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 finals.

The finals scheduled for February 1st to 28th, 2025, will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The legendary defender, alongside Mrisho Ngasa of Tanzania and Kenya’s McDonald Mariga, will grace the draw function at Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a total of 19 nations, including hosts Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and defending champions Senegal, will be engaged in the draw to officially map out the tournament’s month-long schedule.

Total Energies CAF African Nations Championship 2024 Confirmed Qualified Teams include Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda (all co-hosts); Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar. Two more teams will be confirmed for the finals.

The confederation applauded the three football stars for their contribution to African football over the years.

“Wasswa, Ngasa, and Mariga have contributed to the ever-growing standard of African football and have left their mark on the game in their respective countries,” they said.

Wasswa, whose national team career spans over a decade, has represented the Cranes 75 times and also enjoyed a career in Turkey and Saudi Arabia before his 2021 retirement.

Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasa is rated as one of the best players in the East African nation and his nation’s leading scorer with 25 goals. He played for three of the biggest clubs in Tanzania, Simba AC, Young Africans, and Azam FC.

Beyond Tanzanian borders, he played for Free State Stars in South Africa and Fanja in Oman before his retirement with Tanzania’s Ndanda Sports Club.

Mariga enjoyed a magnificent career that included a UEFA Champions League title with Inter Milan, as well as the Serie A trophy and two Coppa Italia wins. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2010. He won 40 caps for the Kenya national team, scoring five goals.
