The Cabinet has resolved to extend the term of office for the Local Council’s one and two chairpersons for six months.
This was announced on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, during a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
Minister Baryomunsi said the proposal has yet to be approved by the parliament before it can be implemented.
“We extended the life of the local councils for a period of 180 days, and the cabinet approved that proposal,” said Baryomunsi.
He further said that the extension of the day will take place on July 10, 2023, in order to validate any action that will have been taken since the date when their term expired.
Last week, the speaker of Parliament suspended the house indefinitely pending a cabinet decision following the expiration of the terms of office of the LCI and LCII chairpersons.
