The Cabinet has approved the agreement to host the African Water and Sanitation Association Academy (AWASA), which aims to build capacity and train water and sanitation professionals in Uganda and throughout Africa.

AWASA is an international organization which brings together utilities like National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) similar facilities in various countries.

This development stemmed from the statement presented by the Minister of Water and Environment requiring cabinet to consider and approve the host country agreement between the government and AWASA.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information and Communications Technology and National Guidance (ICT&NG) confirmed the development while addressing the media on Tuesday May 28, 2024,  at Uganda Media Centre (UMC) in Kampala.

According to Baryomunsi, the cabinet approved the agreement to host AWASA, stating that different countries have expressed confidence in Uganda and the good water done by NWSC.

He commended NWSC and the Ministry of Water and Environment for the exemplary work done.

“I want to appreciate and congratulate National Water and Sewerage Corporate and the Ministry of Water and Environment for the exemplary work that they continue to do that is appreciated across the region and that’s why Uganda was voted by this Association to host this regional Academy,” Baryomunsi said. 

He further noted that the board of the association took a decision and identified Uganda to host an academy after competitive process in which Uganda emerged the winner.

AWASA constitutes of over 100 utilities from over 40 countries in Africa with its headquarters in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa.
