President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has confirmed that Uganda’s exports to China have risen to about nearly 500 billion Ugandan Shillings (USD 138 million), a sign of growing trade momentum between the two countries.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday, January 21st, 2026 while bidding farewell to the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, HE Zhang Lizhong, who paid a courtesy call at Museveni’s country home in Kisozi, Gomba District.

Museveni welcomed the export growth as a positive shift in Uganda China economic relations but said the figures still fall short of the country’s potential.

“I am happy to note that Uganda’s exports to China have increased to USD 138 million, although this is still not enough and we should be able to do much more,” the President said.

He pointed to China’s decision to remove taxes on Ugandan exports as a major boost that could unlock higher volumes, support local producers, and accelerate wealth creation.

The move is expected to make Ugandan products more competitive in the Chinese market, especially agricultural and value-added goods.

Museveni also reaffirmed government support for Chinese investments in Uganda, saying the partnership has been mutually beneficial and remains a priority.

Ambassador Zhang Lizhong thanked the President and the Ugandan government for the cooperation and support he received during his tenure, noting that the strong bilateral relationship provides a solid foundation for expanded trade and investment going forward.

As Uganda pushes to increase export earnings and reduce its trade deficit, China is emerging as a key market, with officials signaling that the current figures are just a starting point rather than the ceiling.
