Authorities in Buikwe District are investigating the brutal killing of a 28-year-old mobile money agent, Mutebi Fred, who was attacked by unidentified assailants in Ngogwe Village, Ngogwe sub county.
According to preliminary reports, on April 25 2025, Mutebi hired a boda boda rider he usually hires to take him home after closing his business late at night.Upon reaching the main road near his home, Mutebi reportedly requested to be dropped off, saying the remaining distance was short. However, shortly after getting off the motorcycle, a group of thugs ambushed him.
Eyewitnesses said that the attackers first struck Mutebi with a machete on his arms in an attempt to force him to release a bag he was carrying, believed to contain cash. Despite the injuries, Mutebi resisted handing over the bag, prompting the assailants to shoot him in the shoulder, leaving him on the ground bleeding profusely before fleeing with the money.
Hussein Kizito, one of the first responders at the scene, revealed that as soon as the thugs had reportedly left the scene, the locals rushed Mutebi to Nkonkonjeru Hospital, but unfortunately the doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
‘’We did our best to rush Mutebi to the hospital for first aid; however, his wounds were so deep and he was bleeding a lot,’’ Kizito disclosed.
Buikwe Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Maj David Matovu confirmed the incident, and warned mobile money agents against transporting large sums of money, especially late at night, because it is risky and can cost them their lives.
Maj Matovu also revealed that a particular firearm is being used by thugs to rob and kill people across several districts in the region; however, he assured the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to recover the weapon and apprehend the culprits.
’’We are investigating the matter thoroughly, and we shall apprehend those responsible,” Matovu said.
He also urged mobile money operators to seek police escorts or other safety measures when moving with cash, especially after dark, so as to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Residents in the Ngogwe community, shocked by the tragic death of Mutebi Fred, have called for increased security and a quicker police response in the area.
Authorities have pledged to intensify investigations and enhance patrols to curb the growing wave of attacks targeting mobile money operators and other vulnerable groups.
Additionally, the authorities have called upon the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may assist in tracking down the perpetrators.
