The Buganda Kingdom Premier, Charles Peter Mayiga, has asked the Parliament of Uganda to prioritize health in their legislative agenda if the country is to attain socio-economic transformation.

Katikiro Mayiga made this call on April 2, 2024, while meeting the delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs), led by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, who went to support the Kabaka birthday run.

According to Mayiga, parliament should ensure that hospitals are equipped with drugs and equipment to ensure that Ugandans access healthcare services.

“An economic transformation is a direct consequence of productivity, and productivity is a consequence of work. Everything people engage in depends on how capable they are, in a physical sense, of executing those undertakings. So if health isn’t prioritized, not much will be accomplished,” Mayiga stated.

He emphasized the need to improve the remuneration of health workers to motivate and enable them to do their work well.

He further noted that most institutions have now put more focus on health aspects because UNAIDS wanted to end HIV/AIDS in Uganda by 2030, so Uganda as a country decided to embark on and focus on HIV/AIDS since 2020.

However, Speaker Among pledged Parliament’s support to the Kingdom unconditionally. She also urged MPs to work toward improving the health of their constituents.

She later handed over Ugx 50 million that parliament contributed towards the Kabaka birthday run. Among on a personal basis also donated two cattle to the kingdom.
