A 20-year-old girl in Budaka district, Bukedi sub-region, has become a community game changer to many of her peers after completing the six-month training from the Bukedi Zonal Industrial Hub located in Kibuku district.
Jane Logose, a resident of Naigobya village, Bwase Parish, and Budaka Town Council in Budaka district, realized her dream and potential shortly after completing her tailoring training.
Hailing from a peasant family whose only means of survival is subsistence farming, Logose recently told President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni how she is offering free training to her fellow teens.
“Mr. President, when I completed my training from here, I got a job that earns me Shs10,000 every from a certain designing shop. Over the weekend, I also offer skills training to my fellow young people so that they can also become self-reliant,” Logose narrated.
According to Logose, she had to sell her only one goat to buy an old sewing machine, which she now uses to train her fellow teens.
“I am now supporting myself and my family to earn a livelihood using the little money I’m earning from my job,” Logose told the President.
Logose is just an example of young people spread across Uganda whose future and dreams have come true after completing training from the 19 Presidential Skilling Hubs.
While launching Bukedi Zonal Industrial Hub on Sunday, November 10th, 2024, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni supported Logose’s struggle with Shs7Million to enable her to acquire new machines and expand skilling opportunities for other young people in her locality.
The president encouraged young people to be courageous in life and stay healthy and noted that the government will start providing start-up kits to trainees who complete their skilling programs from various training hubs. This is to enable them to start their businesses and create jobs for other young people.
Jane Barekye, the State House Controller, described this as a monumental milestone toward transforming the lives of youth.
“These industrial hubs reflect the President’s commitment to accessible, quality education and vocational training, particularly for those who might otherwise be left behind due to financial challenges,” Barekye said.
According to her, by offering free skilling opportunities in every region, the President aims to break the cycle of school dropouts and provide the youth with practical skills they need to thrive in the modern workforce.
“Together, let us support this transformative vision, ensuring that each hub becomes a beacon of opportunity and empowerment for the youth of Uganda,” Barekye said.
Bukedi Zonal Training Hub is currently training over 200 youths to acquire skills in carpentry and joinery, building and construction, hairdressing, tailoring and fashion design, shoe making, bakery, and metal fabrication.
The goal is to ensure that needy children benefit from the presidential initiative from various centers so that they can be self-employed.
At the end of the 6-month course, students do an assessment exam given by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT). They are given certificates, which are an equivalent of the Uganda Certificate of Education, UCE.
