Bayer Leverkusen on Monday 26, 2025, officially announced the appointment of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, marking a significant shift for the Bundesliga club.
The 55-year-old Dutchman has signed a contract until June 2027, stepping into the role vacated by Xabi Alonso, who is set to join Real Madrid.
Ten Hag, who previously coached Bayern Munich’s reserve side from 2013 to 2015, returns to German football with a wealth of experience.
His tenure at Manchester United saw him end the club’s six-year trophy drought with a League Cup in 2023 and an FA Cup in 2024, despite his dismissal in October 2024 following inconsistent Premier League performances.
Ten Hag noted that eager to build on the foundations laid by Xabi Alonso to fulfil the club’s vision with help of the quality of the squad align.
“I’m thrilled to join Bayer Leverkusen, one of Germany’s top clubs with a strong ambition to compete at the highest level in Europe,” Ten Hag said in a statement.
Leverkusen, who finished second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich this season, are looking to Ten Hag to maintain their competitive edge. Under Alonso, the club achieved an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a German Cup in 2023-24, also exiting the German Cup in the semi-finals.
However, Ten Hag inherits a squad facing challenges, with key players like Jeremie Frimpong moving to Liverpool and Florian Wirtz heavily linked with a transfer. Despite these departures, Leverkusen’s management expressed confidence in Ten Hag’s ability to adapt and drive the club forward.
According to Simon Rolfes, the sporting director of Leverkusen, the club believes Ten Hag can lead the club toward a sustained success.
“Erik’s track record, tactical acumen, and familiarity with German football make him the ideal choice to lead us into the next chapter,” said Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes.
The Dutchman’s prior experience in the German football system, including his time at Bayern Munich where he won the Bavarian state league, is expected to ease his transition.
Ten Hag’s first task will be to prepare the team for the upcoming Bundesliga season, with expectations high for Leverkusen to challenge Bayern Munich for the title once again. His official unveiling is scheduled for later this week, where he is expected to outline his vision for the club.
