The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strict safety standards as the Office of the Auditor General of Uganda conducted an oversight visit to major oil and gas project sites, highlighting growing scrutiny over the management of Uganda’s multi-billion-dollar petroleum investments.

The two-day field programme, running from March 5–6, is led by Edward Akol, the Auditor General, and aims to strengthen transparency, accountability and responsible use of public resources in Uganda’s rapidly developing petroleum sector.

During the visit, the delegation is touring strategic oil infrastructure sites to assess project progress and gain firsthand insight into the operational realities of Uganda’s flagship energy developments.

UNOC Chief Executive Officer Proscovia Nabbanja welcomed the audit team and underscored the importance of maintaining strict safety protocols during all field activities.

“UNOC emphasizes strict adherence to safety protocols during all field engagements. We encourage the delegation to interact with project teams to better understand the progress and developments across Uganda’s petroleum sector,” Nabbanja said.

She noted that the visit provides an opportunity for the audit team to observe ongoing work and engage directly with technical teams implementing the projects.

Akol emphasized that the scale and complexity of investments in the petroleum sector demand strong governance frameworks and vigilant oversight.

“The magnitude and capital intensity of petroleum sector projects require institutions to identify, assess and manage financial and operational risks while maintaining strong accountability systems,” he said.

The delegation is inspecting several critical sites, including the Kingfisher Development Area, Tilenga Project Area, Kabalega Industrial Park and Pump Station 1 of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Officials from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda and UNOC are also delivering technical briefings on project implementation and sector progress.

The oversight visit underscores government efforts to ensure transparency, strengthen accountability and safeguard public resources as Uganda moves closer to commercial oil
