Paul Mwiru, the former Jinja Municipality East Member of Parliament (MP), has on Friday, July 14, 2023, confirmed his readiness and determination to work with National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

The move was announced, during a live show on his radio station, Busoga one 90.6 FM  Omwoyo Gwa Busoga in  the presence of Bobi wine, which was hosted by Innocent Odwor John Anyole in Jinja.

Mwiru, a former member of FDC, who later Joined Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), and whose flag he held in the 2021 elections but lost to NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta, has opted to join NUP.

According to Mwiru, he is ready to work with the NUP party President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine to build the party structures.

“I am ready to work closely with my leader Robert Kyagulanyi to share knowledge and ideas to build party structures,” Mwiru said.

Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament while touring Busoga region early last month, said that they need leaders like Mwiru to cause change in Busoga region and his leadership is key as bright leaders like him are needed.

“We need to unite people of Busoga and we believe that change is possible. In our times, people like Mwiru have strong leadership skills and can help us attain that,” Mpuuga said.

However, Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General for NUP said that besides Mwiru, the party has received 43 other members from various political parties.

He said that this is a clear reflection of the party’s trust among the populace, adding that this has led to the expansion of the party despite NRM’s use of financial means to woo people to their party.

Whether Mwiru’s political change will cause impact, time will tell, since leaving FDC, for ANT, made his political career go down. However, with his political experience, NUP may stand to benefit.

Mwiru, after losing in 2021 Parliamentary elections, went to Court  and  contested the outcome but  the Court dismissed the appeal.
