The President of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat has suspended Besigye’s People’s Government effective Monday, October 30, 2023.

While speaking at the press conference held at the party headquarters at Najjanankumbi in Kampala on Monday, October 30, 2023, Amuriat said that, no party member will be allowed to participate in any activities of the People’s Government.

“After a period of reflection and through internal discussions, the FDC National Executive Committee reached a consensus to recall the resolution that established the People’s Government. With immediate effect therefore, the FDC will no longer participate in any activities associated with the People’s Government,” Amuriat said.

According to Amuriat, this severing of relations comes after a series of challenges that the FDC has faced managing two centers of power which have conflicted since 2018 leading to total misunderstanding immediately before, during, and after the 2021 general elections.

“Our party has experienced internal conflicts, accompanied by allegations and counter-accusations that have contributed to considerable turmoil within our ranks with the resultant negative publicity of the party in the media,” he said.

He added that, some members of FDC have chosen to adopt a hostile stance against their party in complete contravention of Article 12 of the party constitution.

Amuriat warned the leaders of the Katonga faction against posturing as the legitimate leaders of the party yet the matter was solved at the 6th October National Delegates Conference with the election and swearing in of new leaders.

He also warned that, such leaders should stop issuing illegal notices of using FDC-headed paper, and using party symbols, slogans, and colors, revealing that a well-constituted committee is set to take disciplinary action against such errant members.

Background of People’s Government

The People’s Government comprises of the FDC diehards who supported the defiance campaign orchestrated by Dr. Kizza Besigye.

The People’s Government and assembly were unveiled in February 2019, with Besigye as the President, and the Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago as the Deputy President. The FDC Vice President for Eastern Uganda, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba was named Prime Minister, deputized by FDC Spokesperson and Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda.

Ssemujju said that, the People’s Government is part of the mechanisms that they deployed to continue weakening Museveni and force him to relinquish power.

Meanwhile, the Katonga faction leaders who are diehards of the People’s Government are in Busoga region, the Eastern part of the country to mobilize grassroots party supporters ahead of LCI, LCII, and women council’s elections.
