The race to secure the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer slot ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections is heating up, with six candidates, including top party heavyweights, officially entering the contest.

The party’s Deputy Secretary for Publicity in charge of publications, Mulindwa Walid Lubega, revealed individuals who picked nomination forms including: Patrick Oboi Amuriat – FDC President and 2021 presidential candidate, Nathan Nandala Mafabi – FDC Secretary General and Budadiri West MP, Usaama Ssemogerere – Young entrant from a renowned political family, Bumba Erinest, Matsiko Dan, Malinga Gerald.

According to Lubega, the six aspirants are expected to return their completed nomination forms on May 6 and 7, before facing a party vetting committee. A public debate, followed by internal campaigns, will precede the election of the party’s flag bearer in July 2025.

This contest pits some of the FDC’s most influential figures against each other.

Amuriat, the current party president, is aiming for a second shot at the presidency, after coming in third in the 2021 election. His key rival, Nandala Mafabi, a veteran legislator and long-time FDC figure, is known for his organizational strength and grassroots appeal.

Despite past reports that Amuriat would back Mafabi for the 2026 race, both are now confirmed contestants, setting the stage for a high-stakes internal showdown.

Lubega emphasized that the electoral commission will oversee a transparent and fair nomination process.

The ultimate party flag bearer will be chosen by the FDC National Delegates Committee on July 31st to face off in Uganda’s 2026 presidential race.

However, the party condemned the electoral commission for alleged malpractices during the ongoing voter update exercise, which they say undermines electoral credibility.

This upcoming nomination process signals a pivotal moment as Uganda heads toward the next general elections. Stay tuned for updates on the FDC’s journey to 2026.
