The Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi has appointed Patrick M. Ayota as the new NSSF Managing Director replacing Richard Byarugaba.
In July 2023, Byarugaba was accused with the mismanagement of savers’ money and corruption at the NSSF, where the IGG Betty Kamya ordered him together with the Director Finance, Stevens Mwaje to refund UGX 4.4 billion and another UGX 687.3million or risk facing prosecution.
According to Dr. Peter Kimbowa, the Chairman Board of Directors of NSSF has appointed Ayota as the Managing Director for a period of five years, effective August 18, 2023.
“The appointment follows the NSSF Board of Directors’ recommendation to the Minister, in accordance with Sections 39 and 40 of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Act, as amended,” Kimbowa said.
He said that the Board is confident that Ayota is the right person to steer the Fund forward at such a critical time following changes in legislation that oblige the Fund to play a leading role in expanding social security coverage to all Ugandans.
Ayota has been the Fund’s Acting Managing Director for the last 8 months. He has also served as Deputy Managing Director since December 2017 and Chief Financial Officer since July 2011.
