The Uganda U20 Women’s National Team, the Queen Cranes, have won a bronze medal in the third-place playoff game against Senegal in the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.
The Queens defeated Senegal in penalties (6:5) after a goalless draw in normal time on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Cape Coast Stadium.
The penalties were converted by Shamira Nalugya, Shakirah Nankwanga, Harima Kanyago, Catherine Wujja, Shamusa Najjuma, and Catherine Nagadya, with only Dorcus Lwalisa missing her take.
This is Uganda’s first continental medal for women’s football.
Moses Hassim Magogo, the President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), congratulated the Queen cranes on his official X handle.
“I want to congratulate the Queen Cranes for winning bronze at the African Games. We brought a coach, one of the best on the continent, and we allowed her to build a team. It is going to take time, but we can already see certain things working out,” Magogo stated.
Ghana was crowned champions of the women’s football tournament at the 13th African Games after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over defending champion Nigeria.
