Adventist Development and Relief Agency International Uganda has launched Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) in Kamwenge District as part of its efforts to boost livelihoods, particularly among refugees in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement.
ADRA is collaborating with partners like the World Food Programme and UN agencies in Kamwenge to benefit a total of 84,000 refugees.
Benon Babumba, the ADRA Country Programs Director, during the launch on April 30, 2025, in Kampala, said the project will transform the lives of refugees in settlements.
“Through the VSLA approach, beneficiaries save money regularly and access loans to invest in their businesses or meet emergencies, thereby expanding their income sources and improving financial inclusion,” Babumba said.
Refugees have benefited from ADRA’s financial literacy training, which has improved their capacity to launch and maintain small businesses by equipping them with knowledge of financial record-keeping, company management, and saving.
In order to enhance food security, resilience, and economic opportunities for more than 70,000 refugees and locals.
Refugees have benefited from several programs focused on food security, livelihoods, and social support, including Food Assistance and Nutrition, Livelihood Development, Agricultural Support, Financial Literacy, and inclusion of Social and Community Support.
