A Suspected Allied Democratic Force (ADF) rebel has surrendered himself to Police and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 309 Brigade in Kafulo Kyanzazz parish in Rubirizi district.

SCP Fred Enanga, the Spokesperson of Police while addressing the press on September 11, 2023, at Naguru Police Headquarters said that, an ADF collaborator had handed himself to the joint security agencies in the district of Rubirizi.

“We have an ADF collaborator in Rubirizi who yesterday handed himself over to the joint security agencies,” Enanga said.

Enanga identified the ADF collaborator as William Byaruhanga, a 30-year-old resident of Busunga trading center in Bundibugyo district.

According to Enanga, the suspected ADF rebel surrendered to the UPDF 309th Brigade in Kafulo Kyanzaza parish.

He encouraged all the ADF members who keep coming to Uganda because of the pressure in DRC to also surrender before they are arrested and charged.

Enanga confirmed that the suspect was transferred to Makenke Army Barracks in Mbarara for further interrogation.

“We have transferred him to Makenke Army Barracks in Mbarara for further management. What we want is to gather information from him that might be useful against some of the existing ADF threats in the country and any other enemies of Uganda,” Enanga said.

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Joint Security agencies have said that the pressure applied on ADF is too much and many of the rebel fighters are trying to hand themselves since the Kasese school attack where a students were killed.

During the Thursday night, September 7, 2023, Presidential National Address, President Museveni confirmed to the nation that ever since the start of Operation Shujaa in 2021, UPDF has put out of action 567 ADF rebels connected with Islamic State militants in the DRC, while fifty terrorists have been captured alive, and 32 have surrendered. The total currently stands at 33 rebels who have so far surrendered as of Monday, September 11, 2023.
