A boat near Zinga Island bound for the Nakiwogo landing site has capsized, claiming three lives and leaving two unaccounted for.

According to Uganda Police Marine Unit spokesperson ASP Anthony Amanya, a boat belonging to Steven Muregye, the Youth Councillor-Bussi Sub County, carrying 16 passengers, capsized due to adverse weather conditions at 5 a.m. on March 12, 2024, near Zinga Island. It was headed for the Nakiwogo landing site.

“Regrettably, during the journey, the boat capsized, and the Marine Unit responded promptly, rescuing 11 individuals who were wearing life jackets at the time of the unfortunate incident,” ASP Anthony Amanya said.

He noted that they recovered three bodies: a juvenile Lucy, her mother Nigina, and Mrs. Nalusa. He added that the two individuals who are unaccounted for are Emmanuel Nsubuga and Coxswain Odeke.

“We are collaborating with other relevant authorities and are fully committed to conducting thorough search and rescue operations to locate the missing persons and provide support to the affected families,” he added.

Police have urged travelers to exercise and adhere to safety guidelines while traveling by boat, especially during adverse weather conditions.

According to locals, the boat had a mechanic fault with the engine, and when water submerged it, the person who was controlling the boat had to go into the water to retrieve the engine. However, his efforts were all in vain, as the water had already entered the boat, capsizing it with the traders and all their food items.
