China Bites back at Trump with 125% Tariffs on U.S. Goods

"We are not afraid of America’s tariffs. In fact, it has exposed the U.S. government's practice of weaponizing tariffs as a tool of bullying and coercion, turning itself into a joke. China will remain confident, focused, and concentrated on managing its own affairs," Jinping said.

The Chinese government in a direct response to President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, has announced a retaliatory measure imposing a staggering 125% tariff on U.S. goods amid ongoing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The announcement was made by Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Diaoyutai Guest House in Beijing on Friday, April 11.

Jinping criticized the U.S. for its “excessive” tariff policies, arguing that these measures have turned trade relations into a “numbers game” with no real economic merit.

“We are not afraid of America’s tariffs. In fact, it has exposed the U.S. government’s practice of weaponizing tariffs as a tool of bullying and coercion, turning itself into a joke. China will remain confident, focused, and concentrated on managing its own affairs,” Jinping said.

Jinping’s comments come after weeks of silence following the U.S.’s tariff hike, which has intensified tensions between the two economic giants. The Chinese leader emphasized that trade wars offer no true victors, warning that further hostility would only lead to self-isolation for the U.S.

“There are no winners in a trade war, and going against the world will only lead to self-isolation,” Jinping stated.

The economic repercussions of the trade war between the U.S. and China have already been felt across various sectors, particularly in Africa, where many countries rely on trade ties with both superpowers.

Despite the threat of a protracted trade conflict, Beijing maintains that it will not be swayed by American tactics.

“This is not just about economics, this is about respect and sovereignty,” Jinping said.

As tensions continue to rise, the international community is closely watching the developments, hoping for a resolution that could prevent further economic fallout.
