Lira Regional Referral Hospital has successfully hosted its first closed heart surgical procedure, benefiting 10 patients. The historic operation was carried out by a team of cardiac surgeons from the Uganda Heart Institute.

During a visit to the hospital on Wednesday 26 February 2025, Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng commended the medical team for their efforts and announced that the government plans to establish 18 regional heart centers across the country.

“This initiative will reduce the burden on patients who currently travel long distances for heart-related treatment,” Dr. Aceng stated.

Dr. Peter Lwabi, the Deputy Executive Director of the Uganda Heart Institute, confirmed that all patients who underwent the surgery are in stable condition and recovering well. He also revealed that Lira University has donated five acres of land to construct Northern Uganda’s first regional heart center in Lira City.

“This will be the first regional heart center in the north, and we are grateful for the support from Lira University. This center will not only improve heart care in the region but also act as a model for other areas,” he added.

Among the beneficiaries was four-year-old Acen Daisy, whom Dr. Aceng interacted with alongside her parent, Oleke Ruben.

The establishment of regional heart centers is expected to improve access to specialized cardiac care in Uganda.
