Kyambogo University has requested government support of UGX 3 billion annually to support inclusive high education for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), a head of the 1st East African Conference on Disability Inclusive Higher Education Media Briefing.
Prof. Eli Rwakishaya Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, made this request during a press conference that took place on November 12, 2024, at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
Prof. Katunguka said that the university has organized the conference because it has had a good track record of inclusive high education for disabled persons, with the university having over 241 students with disabilities enrolled, stating that with government support, the university will be able to empower disabled people to live normal lives.
“We ask that the government support us more on this cause because it takes a lot of resources and technology to enable inclusive education in a university. 3 billion Ugx annually will help the university in running activities of inclusive education for all,” he said.

He added that the university was able to adopt the inclusive high education of PWDs because of its disability policy and the university’s restructuring process to accommodate PWDs.
“The university’s disability policy is designed in a way that every disabled person is catered for depending on their physical needs. For instance, if one is blind, we usually provide them with guides to walk them around the campus. We also have a disability resource center with developed technology to help the disabled in their education,” he added.
