In a quest to boost domestic tourism, Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities has launched a two-day Open Park Day, which is meant to run from October 17-18, 2024. The opportunity is not only for Ugandans but also for foreign residents and the East African Community.
Among the selected Savannah Parks is Murchison Falls National Park, which is Uganda’s largest national park and oldest conservation area.
Covering approximately 3,893 square kilometers, Murchison Falls National Park remains a leading gem for safaris in Uganda, offering an unforgettable experience of Africa’s natural beauty and wildlife.
Bisected by the Victoria Nile River, which flows through the Murchison Falls, the park is home to 76 mammal species and 450 bird species, in addition to the stunning waterfall, a major attraction and highlight for the visitors.
Murchison Falls Park entails notable wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, and the largest population of Nile crocodiles in Uganda, while bird watchers can enjoy species like the shoebill stock and the Goliath heron.

For the tour fanatics who intend to visit the park, they will engage in activities like game drives to view the animals, boat cruises along the Nile while viewing wildlife up close, hiking to the top of the fall, and bird watching.
Formerly known as Kabalenga National Park, the Murchison Falls National Park is located in North Western Uganda in Masindi district, about 305 kilometers north of Kampala.
The Ministry waived off the entrance fees for all Ugandan nationals, foreign residents, and the East African Community, with even free game drives and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) buses stationed at designated points to help visitors access the parks.
According to the ministry, other Open Park Days destinations include: Lake Mburo National Park, Kidepo National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Pian Upe Wild Life Reserve.

The added that free game drives are running from 8:00am to 11:30am and 3:00pm, an opportunity for those locals to experience Uganda’s breath-taking landscapes and diverse wildlife.
