Police in Lira city are hunting for assailants who shot dead two mobile money operators identified as Oliver Akello and Joseph Otim on Monday, August 26, 2024, at around 8:15pm, as the business operation was ongoing in Lira district.

Preliminary information indicates that the unknown thugs first shot in air, thereafter shot the mobile money owner and employee dead, and sped off to unknown location at the scene with unspecified amounts of money from an outlet.

Police urged residents to be vigilant and cooperative to help bring assailants to books of law for murder.

While appearing on a local television on August 26, 2024, Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, informed public that they apprehended four suspects to aid them with investigation on shooting of two mobile money operators, whom they detained at Lira Police Station. He said that this was done with help from the Residential District Commissioner (RDC).

’’As police, we are trying as much as possible to get rid of these persons who want to take people’s lives with a lot of impunity over their struggles, and nobody is happy with it simply because there is no body above the law,’’ Okema said.

James Okullo, a local in Lira city, noted that they suspected a person from within the area to have coordinated the killing and robbery.

‘’No one can come and kill anybody from this area minus a coordinator from this area because someone outside finds it hard to execute killings in an area he or she does not know,’’ Okullo said.

Despite the killings, the police are trying to do all it takes to bring these crime committers to books of law to deter further killing of people.
