99 Drivers Fined during FIKA Salama Extra Operation

A total of 99 drivers were captured on CCTV cameras for driving beyond the prescribed speed limit along Kampala Expressway and fined UGX 200,000.

This was revealed by SP Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety during the weekly security brief on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the Police Headquarters in Naguru.

Kananura said that, UGX 200,000 express penalty was imposed on each of the 99 drivers who were seen on CCTV driving beyond the prescribed speed limit.

“On the updates of FIKA Salama Extra for the period of last one week, a total number of 99 drivers were captured by CCTV cameras for driving beyond a prescribed speed limit along Kampala Expressway. And all were issued with express penalty of 200,000 Ugandan shillings each,” he said.

According to Kananura, the FIKA Salama Extra Awareness Team continues to spread the word about road safety to communities around the nation through media outlets, social media platforms, and in-person interactions.

Kananura noted that, for the period of one week, a total of 991 motorcycles were impounded on various offenses.

“For the period of one week also, a total number of 991 motorcycles were impounded on various offences. And out of these, 502 were riding without driving licenses, 334 were riding without crash helmets, and 298 were without reflective jackets,” Kananura said.

Kananura added that, 127 motorists were arrested on other offenses, including pillion riding, where boda-boda carry more than one passenger on their motorcycles.

Kananura said that on Friday, September 15, 2023, a total number of 173 drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol were arrested from six divisions of Kampala Metropolitan.

“All of these were detained up to the following day, fingerprinted, and issued with express penalty of 200,000 Ugandan shillings,” Kananura added.

According to the global status report on Road Safety 2018, 1.35 million people died and 50 million sustained injuries globally. On average, Uganda loses 12 people daily in traffic road crashes.

In August 2023, the Uganda Police Force partnered with Ministry of Works and Transport, Ministry of Health, Uganda National Roads Authority and launched Operation Fika Salama Extra. This campaign is designed as a special intervention to reduce road crashes in Uganda.
