The 4th Luo Piny festival on December 31st,2024, kicked off in Siaya County, Kenya with focus to promote unity, peace and reconciliation among various luo communities across the region.
One by one, different groups of luo luminaries across Africa started arriving at Migwena Grounds, Siaya County, in Kenya to engage in the annual cultural event.
Led by their respective “Kers” (cultural leaders), the various groups from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other nations.
The Acholi group from Uganda was led by the Paramount Chief David Onen Acana II and other key dignitaries including former Ambassador Dr. John Olara Otunu.
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odongo graced the first day of the regional luo gathering, and while addressing the cultural enthusiasts at Got Ramogi, Odinga called for unity among the luo communities across the region.
“Mama Ida and I are at Migwena Grounds for the 4th Piny Luo cultural festival. Luos from across Africa and the diaspora have gathered here in Siaya, at the foot of Got Ramogi—the revered shrine of the Kenyan Luo—to reflect on “the state of the Luo nation” in the spirit of unity in diversity. Luo delegations,” Odinga said.
The 79-year-old former Kenyan PM said several non-Luo members have also joined the festival, which is expected to last for the next two days.
“We are also joined by non-Luo participants, who have come to celebrate alongside Luos, embracing unity and shared heritage that transcends national borders. We spent an enlightening afternoon at Got Ramogi addressed by Luo luminaries from Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda,” said Odonga.
During the first day of the event, several groups performed enticing traditional songs and dances clearly depicting and displaying rich cultural practices.
On Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, different groups are expected to engage in boat racing, Amen (wrestling), and Ajua at Wich Lum Beach.
Presidents Williams Ruto (Kenya) and Gen. (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda are expected to close the regional cultural event.
The Ugandan groups include the Alur, Acholi, Padhola, Jo Nam while others include the Alur of DRC.
